What happened? I personally believe that when Microsoft stopped thinking about ideas, and started worrying about themselves as a corporation, they slipped. Apple has done a wonderous job of selling the concept. They keep on coming up with the idea, and don't concern themselves too much on the corporate side. They do what MS did - no need to worry about the PnL sheet, as it will come along with the innovation. I feel today about the macbook and the iphone the way I felt about Windows 95 back in the day.

So, how do they fix it? Bring back Gates, and create some wow. Woo us with the next big thing that is simple, and elegant and awe inspiting. And, imho, they will be successful.

Now, for ruling the world? I don't think they can. The world has changed, and they are simply in the same boat as IBM was with Microsoft when compared to the Google's and Amazon of the new frontier. However, they can still be relevant.

Just my 2 cents, cyberdad...
