Tips to buy GPS for your car and extend its life

Are you looking to buy a GPS for your car? Are you confused about which one to buy? Or if you have bought a GPS and now use it. Do you know how to extend the life of your GPS?  The following tips should help to get the right one for you, and also tell you how to do maintenance to increase the life of your GPS system. 

 Tips to buy a best GPS system for your car:

• Think about the reasons why you need a GPS. Is it for personal use or for business use? Will you be using it occasionally or everyday? If the GPS is for personal use or will be used occasionally, I would suggest purchasing a less expensive model with less bells and whistles. If the GPS is going to be used for business purposes or on a daily basis, I would suggest purchasing a higher end model that has more to offer.
• Decide how much money you want to spend. GPS prices range from less than $100 for low end systems to $1000 for high end systems.
• Decide if you want Turn-by-Turn or Text-to-Speech audible directions. Turn-by-Turn audible directions are more commonly found on lower end systems and tell the driver directions in basic terms for example, “make a right turn in 500 feet”. Where as Text-to-Speech audible directions are more descriptive and tell the driver to “make a right turn in 500 feet on Main Street”. I have experienced both and prefer the Text-to-Speech directions. Text-to-Speech also allows the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road making for a safer ride.
• Decide how important POI or Points of Interest is to you. The more POI’s a GPS has, the better chance of finding a gas station, shopping center, food store, a movie theater, restaurants, or state park. The list can go on and on. If you travel often for recreation or work and are unfamiliar with where you are going, having a lot of POI’s would be important. If you are somewhat familiar with where you are going and not traveling far enough to need gas, then POI’s should not be a high priority.
• Decide if you need traffic routing. The traffic routing feature alerts your GPS to traffic congestion on your route and routes you around it. In most cases, traffic routing is an additional feature that you need to subscribe to. Most GPS manufacturers make you pay a one time fee for the feature.
• Decide on the quality of your “routing engine” software. Your routing engine is what makes your GPS pick a particular route from point A to point B. Depending on the quality of the routing engine software you choose, your route could be longer then expected. Your goal is to find a GPS with very good routing engine software.
• Decide if you want your GPS to have Bluetooth technology or an FM transmitter. Some GPS model offer internet connected applications that require the use of a Bluetooth enabled cell phone. An FM transmitter will allow you to play your own recorded music through your GPS to your FM radio via a 3rd party device like an IPOD.
• Decide on what size screen you want. Screen sizes range from 3.5 inches to 7 inches

 Maintenance Tips for GPS system:

• Most GPS units are commonly affected by temperature variations. So try to avoid cranking up the temperature too high or too low.
• The GPS display screens have to be cleaned frequently as it can get dirty due to dust, scratches, and finger smudges. One option is to use a clear shield. You can also use LCD cleaners or microfiber cloths with a little water. But never ever use paper towels or tissue papers for this purpose as they are abrasive.
• Ensure that your GPS unit is held firmly in place with the help of a high-quality friction mount.
• During installation, make sure that the external antenna too is secured properly. Take into account things, such as low-hanging roofs, which may cause damage to the antenna and interrupt the transmission.
• Driver tampering will also affect the product. So avoid tinkering with your GPS unit.
• Also take time to go through the manufacturer’s product manual for their GPS maintenance tips. Better still, use them to get the most out of your GPS unit.

Laptops Vs. Netbooks: Which Is Better?

Laptops nowadays come in different sizes and colors. Their sizes can range anywhere from 7 to 17 inches depending on your choice. Their current colors of red, yellow, brown, pink and blue are stark contrasts against the standard colors of black and silver. And if you are craving for more style, there are currently some units that have catchy designs crafted on the unit itself.

But here is something interesting to know. Not all “laptops” you see on the shelves are actually laptops. Some of them are more appropriately called as Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) or to some, they can easily be referred to as netbooks.

Why the distinction?

Although laptops and netbooks share a relatively similar structure, meaning they basically have a monitor, a keyboard and track pad (counterpart of a mouse in a desktop pc) they are made to have different specifications.

Laptops, for example, are fully functioning computers that have optical drives, 4 to 6 USB 2.0 ports and other slots that you would usually find in a desktop. And because they carry a lot in their body, their size can be anywhere in between 13 – 17 inches. Their price is also indicative of what they have to offer because they often cost more. A laptop in a market currently sells for $500 or above.

Netbooks on the other hand are the smaller counterparts of a laptop. They are made to let the user stay connected to the Internet wherever they go. As such, their size can be 7 – 12 inches and their weight can range from 900g – 1.5 kg. The lightness of their weight and their small size can be mostly attributed to loss of other peripherals like an optical drive. The number of ports is also downgraded. Instead of the usual 4 – 6 USB ports, these netbooks can only have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4. Pricewise, they can be a lot cheaper. Some of these units can sell for $300 or more.

With the emergence of UMPCs, the market has provided consumers an unannounced battle: laptops vs. netbooks. Everybody is aiming to find which is actually better. But to tell you, no article can provide you the answer to that question because choosing a laptop now is like choosing your clothes or hobby. You get to pick which one works for you best.

For example, if you happen to be an animator who needs a fully functioning computer, complete with a huge screen, big memory capacity and an optical drive then of course the laptop is going to be the best choice for you. Because with it you can install all the programs you without worrying if your computer can take it.

However, if you happen to be a student who needs a computer mainly for research through the Internet and word processing, you can choose the lesser complicated netbooks. Another plus on your end is that a netbook is something light that you can conveniently carry with you as you go to and fro your home and school. You can even put it a sleeve and pop it in your bag together with your other books and documents.

This only says that if you are out to settle the score between laptops and netbooks, do not look elsewhere because that is something that you can figure out on your own.

• On some car DVD systems whenever I try to insert or remove an SD card, the screen goes back up too quickly. What can be done about this?
  The CVGX-C14-1GEN uses a slightly different approach to screen raising or lowering. If you press on the eject / angle button it will raise or lower depending on your previous instructions. If you press and hold, the screen will raise or lower fully, so you have full control of how you want the unit to respond.
• You mentioned that this product is compatible with iPods. Will my iPod Nano work with it?
  We tested iPod compatibility using a 3rd generation iPod Nano 4GB.
• When the DVD is playing I have trouble accessing the menu. What can be done?
  The secret to menu access is to remember that by touching the video playing portion of the screen you bring up the menu. If you tap outside of the video area you adjust the screen.

Does It Matter Where You Get Your MBA From?

One of the most commonly debated issues when it comes to discussing the MBA or Masters in Business Administration Degree is whether it really matters where you get your degree from.  There are a variety of opinions on the issue and generally the arguments about the issue revolve around the importance of three factors:  Location, Reputation and Convenience.  In this article I will explore what the competing sides to this debate are and how you should make your decision.  Like many things in life, the truth is the answer as to whether it matters where you get your MBA can be summed up in those two poignant words:  It depends.

Reputation

Traditionally, MBA schools fell into two general categories.  There were the top 10-15 schools that were the cream of the crop and then all the others.  The top schools included many Ivy League stalwarts such as Harvard, Wharton, Columbia, Berkeley and Princeton among others.  It also included top notch business programs that frequently topped the list along with the Ivy crowd such as Northwestern’s Kellogg School and Stanford University.

The reputation of these schools is so stellar and the alumni networks so powerful that both top Wall Street Investment Banks as well as top tier household corporations recruit students directly out of these programs.  In years past it would not be uncommon for a graduate of a top MBA program to have his pick of several 6 figure job opportunities with lucrative hiring bonuses and incentives right out of school.  Whether located on the west coast, east coast or somewhere in the middle, the sheer reputation and pedigree of an MBA from these top schools has launched thousands of powerful careers.

Location

For those that either can’t gain acceptance or that prefer to choose a school that might cater more to a particular industry or area where location is a consideration there is a competing philosophy of choosing MBA programs.  Especially in these tough economic times when traditional MBA Wall Street jobs are not as plentiful, many students are targeting their careers toward certain non-traditional MBA niches such as the environment, hi-tech startups or government work.

For this reason it might make sense to attend a school in the northern California area for instance if one was interested in pursuing work in one of the local high tech companies.  Many environmental companies such as wind and solar energy ventures are based in the mid-west which might hire more from those schools that are local.  Even those that are pursuing traditional jobs on Wall Street might find it beneficial to be in or around New York City in order to take advantage of internships and networking opportunities with New York firms that they would not have the opportunity to do if they were located in a different part of the country or far away.

There is also the legitimate argument that one of the biggest assets that an MBA program gets you is both the internships and alumni network.  For those looking to live in a particular part of the country, attending and MBA program with strong regional and local connections makes sense and can provide great resources and connections in that area that attending a more highly rated, but less connected school could provide.

Convenience

Finally, the last category I’ll discuss has to do with convenience.  The biggest beneficiary of this argument is no doubt the emerging and growing trend of obtaining your MBA via an Online or Distance Learning Program.  While few of these programs can compete with the prestige of a traditional bricks and mortar in-person school, many provide much of the same core curriculum as well as numerous electives.  While networking and internship opportunities will most likely pale in comparison to traditional schools if they exist at all, for working professionals that already have an established network this might be a requirement or of limited value.

Additionally, those pursuing the MBA purely for academic reasons to obtain knowledge, the credential or even some entrepreneurs that have a clear cut business plan they simply want to develop more while in school, the convenience factor of Online MBA programs can’t be matched.  And then of course there’s the dramatic cost savings that an Online MBA can provide compared to a traditional school.  Because every student’s situation is different, it is important to think through your own particular goals and career plans.  It should quickly become clear whether it matters where you get your MBA from.
