A brief history of pencils and pencil sharpeners
There have been so many changes in school life since our grandparents went to school.
Free school milk for every child is a thing of the past, inkwells on desks can no longer be found and the phrase “an apple for teacher” conjures up the image of an Apple Mac on the teacher’s desk rather than a piece of polished fruit.
But some things, such as the length of the school summer holiday, remain reassuringly much the same. For instance, a look at the craft supplies store Baker Ross range of school stationery reveals that there is still a high demand for pencils, pencil sharpeners and other essential stationery which has been helping children learn through the generations.
Stationery firm Berol is familiar to people who passed through the school system during or after the 1970s. Berol was established in 1969 but can trace its roots back to the Eagle Pencil Company – a pencil shop which was opened in New York City in 1856. It would take quite a few Berol pencils to sketch out a history charting how Eagle evolved into Berol.
Baker Ross also stocks Staedtler pencils and pens. Staedtler is a German firm whose history goes back even further than that of Berol’s – it was formed in 1835.
A history of pencils
Pencils have been around long before Berol and Staedtler. The Berol website contains some fascinating information about the history of pencils. Did you know that the ancient Romans wrote on papyrus with a little brush they called a penicillus (or little tail)?
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, in 1564, a deposit of graphite was found in Borrowdale, Cumbria which resulted in the creation of ‘writing sticks’; later known as pencils. The graphite was so pure and rare that it was only mined six weeks a year, with armed guards escorting the wagons containing the graphite to London.
Pencil manufacture
Today’s lead pencils contain no lead whatsoever; they are made from a mixture of graphite and clay with fiery ovens fusing the two elements together. A lead pencil is one of the most famous misnomers in the world.
Berol was instrumental (if you excuse the pun) in developing a mill to grind graphite so that it is suitable for pencil manufacture. Germany – home of Staedtler – must deserve much credit for providing a lot of the clay contained in the world’s finest pencils.
Pencil sharpeners
Without pencils there would have been no need for pencil sharpeners to be invented. And without pencil sharpeners, pencils would, to put it bluntly, be pretty useless. Initially a knife was used to sharpen (or ‘whittle’) pencils – a laborious process which required great skill.
While the Romans, the English and the Germans are due much credit for the invention of pencils, it is the French who led the way with pencil sharpeners. A French mathematician applied for the first patent on pencil sharpeners in 1847.
Sharpeners with shaving-collection systems soon followed as pencil-whittling knives were consigned to the dustbin of history.
Today, companies such as Baker Ross stock electric pencil sharpeners – speedy and reliable devices but maybe not as modern as you would think; electric pencil sharpeners for offices have been made since at least 1917!
