Apple Display Connector

Compatibility

The Apple Display Connector, first debuted in the Apple Studio Display, is physically incompatible with a standard DVI connector, as was previously used in the PowerBook G4 and the older Power Mac G4. The Apple DVI to ADC Adapter, which cost $149US at launch but is now available for $99US, takes USB and DVI connections from the computer, together with power, and combines them into an ADC connection, allowing ADC monitors to be used with DVI-based machines.

The initial implementation of ADC on some models of Power Mac G4s involved the removal of DVI connectors from these computers. This change necessitated a passive ADC to DVI adapter to use a DVI monitor.

The ADC carries up to 100 W of power, an insufficient amount to run most 19-inch or bigger CRTs widely available during ADC’s debut, nor can it run contemporary flat panels marketed for home entertainment (many of which support DVI or VGA connections) without an adapter. The power limit was an important factor for Apple to abandon ADC when it launched the 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display. Power is supplied to the ADC port by a finger connector on the video card, which plugs into a slot on the motherboard between the AGP slot and the back panel of the computer.

On newer displays lacking ADC, Apple still uses a single “ganged cable” that connects the separate signal cables to each other so they cannot tangle. This cable, however, employs standard DVI, power, USB and FireWire connectors, avoiding the problems of its predecessor.

Top guide to replace a key on Dell Inspiron 6000 keyboard

Many people meets that some of the keys on you laptop keyboard is not working, but the others are good and there is no other problems with the keyboard, except some certain keys. Is it necessary to replace a new keyboard? NO, just some new keys is ok, or some keys from other broken keys. It is much cheaper and very easy. Several days ago, my one key of my Dell Inspiron 6000 keyboard(http://www.papatek.com/Dell-Keyboard/Dell-Inspiron-6000-keyboard.html) is not functional, then I found an old dell keyboard and took off the key, replace it to mine, then it works well now. And it costs nothing. The steps is as follows.

Step 1: Orient the hinge
The plastic hinge mechanism must be oriented as shown for it to fit onto the metal keyboard hooks without breaking. Notice the hole on the left side of the hinge is narrower than the hole on the right side. And then hook the right inner edge of the hinge over the metal hook on the base of the keyboard.

Step 2: Secure the hinge into place
“Stretch” the hinge over the right metal hook on the keyboard base. The hinge can actually slide apart slightly, which allows it to fit over both metal tabs on the keyboard base. Once it is sitting in place as shown, it will be easier to put the key on if you “compact” the hinge back together. That is, push the right-side underneath portion of the hinge towards the left. The hinge should now fit snugly in it’s place.
 
Step 3: Place the rubber spring piece
If your keyboard is missing the rubber spring piece, place it in the center, with the large end down. It will be held in place by the surrounding hinge bracket in a moment.

Step 4: Insert the hinge mechanism
Insert the bottom two white plastic tabs on the hinge mechanism into the plastic base piece, one side at a time. In the image below, the left side is being tucked into place first.
 
Step 5: Secure the hinge mechanism
Push down and towards the top of the hinge to tuck the remaining top two white plastic tabs into place. A bit of even pressure should be enough to click the two tabs into place on the plastic base piece. The hinge assembly is complete and should now look like what is pictured. You can now check that the hinge works properly by pressing down on it. If it springs back easily, it is ready for the key to be attached. If it doesn’t feel right, you may need to remove the hinge one tab at a time and try repositioning the rubber spring piece.

Step 6: Press the key into place
Align the key on top of its place on the keyboard, and press down evenly. All four corners of the key should click into place.

However, please Note that the same laptop model can have several different types of hinge mechanisms under the key. Some colors in the pictures may differ for your model. That is fine, what matters most is the shape of the hinge piece.

My Computer Keeps Freezing: Laptop Fan Options

In the past, I was getting frustrated, constantly yelling, “My computer keeps freezing!” Obviously, that did not help. I eventually found out it was the fan.

Computer fans are invaluable, only increasing in importance the hotter your computer becomes. Gaming computers in particular are susceptible to high temperatures because of a high-powered CPU and high-powered graphics card. Both the graphics card and CPU have their own fans, and in some cases, the case has a few fans latched to the walls. When building your own desktop, if you do not pick the right size and speed of fan, your amazingly awesome computer can turn into an amazingly broken computer. With laptops, there are usually less fans built into the system because they do not normally get as hot. This becomes a catch-22 if you own a gaming laptop.

It is true that laptops do not have the capability of getting as hot as a beastly gaming computer, but gaming laptops become troublesome when their fans do not do what they should. To make it worse, laptop fans can be the most annoying things to clean because they do not come out and are usually set in place by an army of screws.

Three options are available when cleaning a laptop fan, 1 you should not choose, and another you should avoid. The first one, the one that you should not do, is ignore it. If your computer does not cool correctly it just starts with freezing. Left alone, a malfunctioning fan can destroy the inside components of your laptop simply because it cannot keep up with the rising temperatures of your computer. The second, and most recommended, option is to send it in for maintenance and repair. Who knows what is really wrong with your fan? The fan could really have died and have to be replaced. Most commonly, it is just filled with dust, lint, hair, etc.

Now let us say that your laptop’s warranty expired a long time ago and it would not really be a loss if you lost it. This brings me to the third options — cleaning it yourself. For this you will need some form of compressed air, something more powerful than Air in A Can, though you are welcome to try that. There are compressed air containers that you pump like bug spray and there are motorized air compression units that compress once plugged in and then really blow you away. It is important to be really aware of how much power is going to come out the end when you hit that button. As you know, it takes very little to damage the inner components of a laptop. You will probably want to do this outside if you do not want your room to look like a miniature vacuum bag just exploded. Flip the laptop over. The pressure that should be hitting the area of the fan should not make the fan spin terribly fast. Spinning a fan manually like that can damage it if it goes faster than it normally does. Blow air just close enough so you can see results. You want to blow the back panel where you can see the fan and also the side of the laptop where the hot air normally exits. Again, do this at your own risk, and if at all possible just simply send it in to a professional. I do not take any responsibility for any of this you try. It definitely worked for me, but it should never be your first option.

“My computer keeps freezing” is not a legitimate way to fix abroken computer. If an injured fan is the reason for substandard performance, send it in to the manufacturer to have it fixed. If that is not an option, try cautiously cleaning it yourself.

In an age where optical drives are looking increasingly quaint, the external DVD writing, USB-bus-powered Lite-On eNAU608 needs something to differentiate it, other than its RRP of AU$75.

To that end, it comes with four double-sided cards, each with a reasonably abstract design on it, save the family holding hands in a flower field. This card can then be inserted in the top of your drive (or indeed, any appropriately sized print out), through a somewhat imprecise process that’ll ensure you’ll only want to do it once. While you’d think this extra bit of frivolity would impact on the height of the drive, the eNAU series isn’t too bad, topping out at 18.6mm high.

It’s otherwise a fairly ordinary 8x external burner that comes with a USB Y cable (of which the data carrying cable is far too short at around 16cm), Nero 9 Essentials and supports LiveScribe, the HP-derived technology that allows you to burn labels to the top of specially marked optical discs. It even supports label tag — that is, burning a label into the unused portion of the writeable side of a disc. If neither labelling tech matters to you, you can pick up Lite-On’s eNAU508 for an entire AU$6 less.

The reason for the limited write speed? It has to do all its writing over USB 2.0, limiting it to a theoretical 480Mbps.

Running an ImgBurn Discovery on a 16x TDK single layer DVD-R (CMC MAG.AM3) took 10 minutes and 50 seconds to fill the disc. As is common for optical technologies, things got faster as the write head reached the edge of the disc, hitting the specified 8x writing speed 90 per cent of the way through. The average write rate was 5.7x.

The eNAU does the job, but then again, so do so many other external burners. If you can find one cheap, then great. Otherwise, we’d stick to the non-”personalised” models to save a few bucks.
