Cloud Printer for Mac – How to setup Print Plugin to print to a Google Cloud Print printer
Buying a New Printer – Does Operating System Matter?
There are two major operating systems in the world, and both of them are constantly warring with one another over the hearts and favor of consumers. Windows vs. Mac. Who would have thought that the massive computer showdown would be between companies with icons that make it like a window against an apple?
But that’s where things stand, and when people head out to shop for a computer, the idea of their operating system may never once enter their minds. Considering the number of printers available, one might begin to wonder – should the operating system be taken into consideration?
Overall the answer is no. Though there are a handful of printers that simply are more friendly with certain operating systems than others, when you purchase a new printer, generally you do not have to worry about the operating system.
This is because printing companies want to sell as many printers as possible, and if they were to stick to only one company’s operating system, it would severely limit their possible market. For a time, this didn’t seem to be much of a big deal, as Apple was struggling under the power that Microsoft held. In the past, considering your operating system was, in fact, important because some big name companies made most of their printers compatible only for Windows computers.
However, the Apple company has since made a huge comeback. So much so that their commercials take a dig at Microsoft and the Windows operating system every chance they get. Companies that develop printers keep a sharp eye on their markets and what is going on, so once Apple gained a stronger foothold, more and more printers compatible with the various Mac operating systems came into being.
These days, just about any printer you consider will be compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. If you aren’t sure, simply examine the specifications information that the printer has, either online or in the retail store. The minimum system requirements will always tell you what systems the printer is compatible with. What you should actually concern yourself more with is not which operating system – Mac or Windows – but which version of either one you currently have.
Windows has consistently cranked out new operating systems throughout the years. The most recent being Vista and not long after that, Windows 7. The majority of printers are made with several operating systems in mind; an HP all in one printer can be compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista; Mac: OS X v 10.4 or 10.5. If you have one of those operating systems, you are set. If not, you may have to rethink your printer choice.
Luckily, computer and operating system creators understand that some printers were not made when the current operating system was; you may still have a Canon ink cartridge printer developed in 1999 and be running Windows XP. Computer systems are often still able to read old drivers and recognize the printer, even if it wasn’t made specifically to match that operating system. So once you choose a printer, you don’t often have to worry about it no longer working should you decide to upgrade your operating system later on.
