Mac Tutorial – Formatting External Hard Drive

How to Image a Mac Hard Drive and Mac Recovery

Backup is the most excellent method to prevent data loss and safeguard your valuable data. And Creating Image of the hard drive is the best option to backup data. Image is an exact replica of source media, which can be stored on any internal or external storage device. In Mac OS X operating system, you can create image of your hard drive using Disk Utility, without investing on any expensive third-party utility. You can easily perform Mac Data Recovery using the hard drive image, in case of hard drive failure or data loss.

Disk Utility is originally a disk repair tool, which is used to check the integrity and consistency of your Mac OS X hard drive. You can access it from: User-> Applications-> Utilities-> Disk Utility. It is quite effective and easy to use. You can create image of Mac OS X hard drive using Disk Utility through the underwritten steps:

•    Start your Mac OS X machine using Boot DVD. To do so, insert boot DVD in the DVD drive and hold the C key when your system boots.

•    On the next screen, select your language. This is a step to get into the Disk Utility. When you see the menu bar, choose Disk Utility from Utilities menu.

•    When the Disk Utility program opens, select the source drive. It is the media that you want to create image of. After selecting the source drive, specify a destination drive to store disk image on it.

•    Click Restore button. Let the process complete and you get an absolute copy of your Mac OS X hard drive.

•    After completion of the process, reboot your system and you are ready to go.

The image file works as a separate hard drive volume, which can be accessed independently. When you face system failure or system crash like situations, which causes data loss, it is possible to restore data from image and perform File Recovery Mac.

However, if you do not create image of your hard drive, or image itself gets damaged, you can not restore data from it. In such cases, Mac Data Recovery Software come to your rescue, if any data loss occurs.

The applications are particularly designed to methodically scan entire hard drive and extract all inaccessible data from it. Mac Recovery applications come equipped with interactive user interface to offer easy recovery.

Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery software recovers lost, missing, inaccessible, and deleted data from Mac hard drive and other supported storage media. The software works well with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.5 Leopard, 10.4 Tiger, and 10.3.9 Panther. It salvages data from HFS, HFS+, HFSX, HFS Wrapper, and FAT file system volumes.

The East Coast editor of Launch magazine, Randall is undoubtedly one of the many journalists eager to exclaim “genius!” again, but his biography of the…

The Hatter is Mad!

The Hatter is Mad!

The deepening financial crisis is worrying for all Americans. It certainly has revealed a Republican Party divided and befuddled as its most basic principles come crashing down. The seminal Republican tenets—that wildly free markets will somehow regulate themselves; that as the rich get richer they will suddenly develop a conscience and want to share their wealth; that down-home, anti-intellectual politicians can use common sense to unravel the complexities of imploding US and world financial institutions—have all been proved to be an alarmingly dangerous trip down Alice’s rabbit hole.

To top it all, it is now clear George W. has zero clout left within his own party, and it is his arch enemy Democrats who are trying to help him out of his self-inflicted quagmire. As for John McCain, the most unlikely of Economic White Knights… he seems bent on moving his erratic behavior to amazing new heights.

First we had his most senior economic adviser, Phil Gramm, telling us that it (the imminent recession) was all in our heads, and that we were a nation of whiners…exit stage left, pursued by a bear!?

Then as Fannie and Freddy folded, he assured us our economy was strong, only to tell us the next day that in fact we were in crisis. His “inspired” solution was to fire Christopher Cox, as if this beleaguered chair of the SEC had somehow wrought the mess single handed.

Next we learn that the lobbying firm owned by McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, received $15,000 a month from Freddie Mac from late 2005 until last month.

Finally, it all became too much for him and he suspended his campaign, though he didn’t close any offices or pull any ads or surrogates off the air, and off he went to Washington to put “country first.”

When it looked as if a bailout plan had been hammered out, he claimed credit for “bringing everyone to the table.” In fact, at the very moment when the deal was made, the only people at his sumptuous table were the Liebermans, while Paulson and Pelosi ate pizza on paper plates.

This is not the time to apportion blame, so says McCain, yet he says this crisis is the fault of Obama and the Democrats, for not being nice enough to the Republicans in the House and daring to mention that it is the Republicans’ runaway deregulation that has brought us to this sorry pass.

Does anyone else feel as though they are in a hall of mirrors? Alice’s Rabbit Hole is beginning to look better and better. At least in Wonderland we are warned that the Hatter is Mad!

Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard Unboxing Mac

Macbook Air User Guide

1) First steps (a) Unpacking

When you remove your Macbook Air, Mac Computer from its packaging, you should also find

  • A Micro-DVI to VGA Adaptor
  • A Micro-DVI to DVI Adaptor
  • A Power cord
  • A 45W MagSafe Power Adaptor
  • Software DVDs

(b) Charging

Pull away the plastic film from the 45W MagSafe Power Adaptor and plug the adaptor into an electric socket. Take the other end of the cable and connect it to the magnetic MagSafe power port on the left hand side of your MacBook Air.

If necessary, extend the MagSafe cable by removing the prongs from the adaptor and inserting the power cord into the socket beneath them. Place the other end of the power cord into the electric socket. To disconnect the MagSafe Power Adaptor from the electricity, first remove the power cord plug from the adaptor.

An amber light on the MagSafe connector shows that the MacBook Air battery is charging. When the battery is fully charged, a green light appears.

(c) Basic features

The basic features of your MacBook Air include

  • (from right to left) a microphone, camera indicator light, iSight camera, and ambient light sensor at the top edge of the screen
  • a mono speaker under the keyboard
  • a power button near the top right hand corner
  • a trackpad and trackpad button below the keyboard
  • a sleep indicator light and infrared receiver on the right of the front edge of your MacBook Air
  • a built-in battery
  • a MagSafe power port on the left-hand side
  • a headphone jack, USB 2.0 port, and a Micro-DVI port in a concealed hatch on the right-hand side

2) Initial set-up (a) Setup Assistant

Setup Assistant appears on your screen when you first switch on the MacBook Air. Follow the instructions that lead you to the “Do You Already Own a Mac?” screen. You now have a choice between:

  • a basic set-up
  • a set-up that includes the migration of files from another Mac

(b) Basic set-up

  • Choose “Do not transfer my information now”
  • Click “Continue”
  • Use the prompts to arrange your user account and wireless network

(c) Set-up with file migration from another Mac

  • For this you need another Mac with an optical disc drive (see “Optical discs” below)

(d) Customise your MacBook Air

  • Click Apple > System Preferences on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen, or click the System Preferences icon on the Dock at the bottom
  • Browse and use System Preferences to customise your MacBook Air settings

(e) Using the trackpad

Use the trackpad to

  • scroll
  • click
  • double-click
  • drag
  • move the pointer

Control the distance you send the pointer across the screen by the speed of your finger on the trackpad:

  • a slow movement of your finger sends the pointer a short distance
  • a fast movement sends the pointer a greater distance

If you’re unfamiliar with the trackpad, it’s worth spending time learning its features. These include the following:

  • Secondary or right clicking. This enables you to use shortcut menu commands. Place two fingers on the trackpad, then click the trackpad button.
  • Two finger scrolling. Scroll up, down or sideways by making these movements with two fingers on the trackpad.

Some trackpad movements apply to specific applications such as iPhoto:

  • Two finger pinching. Pinch two fingers together on the trackpad to zoom in or out.
  • Two finger rotating. Rotate two fingers on the trackpad to turn images and pages.
  • Three finger swiping. This allows you to turn quickly through the pages of a document or through a series of images.

To fine-tine and set trackpad options:

  • select Apple > System Preferences
  • click Keyboard & Mouse
  • click Trackpad

For more details:

  • select Help > Mac Help
  • click Trackpad

3) Optical discs (a) Using an optical disc drive

Your MacBook Air does not have an optical disc drive. To

  • install the software that comes with the computer
  • load other applications and files from a disc
  • migrate files

You must use the optical disc drive on another Mac or PC. Alternatively, use a MacBook Air external SuperDrive

(b) Setting up CD/DVD sharing

The Mac or PC you use for CD/DVD sharing must be on the same wired or wireless network. The Mac must also have the Mac OS X v10.4.10 operating system or later. The PC must have Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Your MacBook Air comes with a Mac OS X Install Disc 1. Use this to load the CD/DVD Sharing Setup. This includes

  • CD/DVD Sharing software
  • Migration Assistant
  • Remote Install Mac OS X

If you’re using a Mac as your other computer, double click “DVD or CD Sharing Setup” when it appears on screen.

If you’re using a PC, click on “DVD or CD Sharing” in the dialogue box that appears on screen.

In both cases, follow the screen instructions.

(c) Migrating files and applications to your MacBook Air from another Mac

  • Load the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 as above
  • Ensure your MacBook Air and the other Mac are on the same wireless or wired network
  • On the MacBook Air, follow the instructions of Setup Assistant as far as the “Do You Already Own a Mac?” screen
  • Click “from another Mac”
  • Select your wireless network (if you’re working wirelessly) and click “Continue”
  • On the screen “Connect To Your Other Mac”, a passcode now appears

Please note: the following steps apply to the other Mac

  • In Applications/Utilities, open Migration Assistant and click “Continue”
  • Choose “To another Mac” as your migration method and click “Continue”
  • Close all other applications, if you have not done so already, and click “Continue”
  • Enter the passcode from the MacBook Air screen in the given box
  • Click “Continue”
  • The migration now starts

During the migration, do not use your other Mac for anything else.

(d) Loading other data

Using your wireless connection, you can download many applications from the Internet.

To load applications from a DVD or CD:

  • set up CD/DVD sharing (see (b) above) and follow the instructions in (e) below, or
  • connect a MacBook Air SuperDrive to the USB port, insert the disc, and follow the onscreen instructions

(e) Sharing discs

You can share a CD or DVD on a Mac or PC with your MacBook Pro.

Please note: you may not be able to share films and games because they are copy-protected.

  • Follow the procedure given in (b)
  • Ensure your MacBook Air and the other computer are on the same network

If your other computer is a Mac:

  • select Apple > System Preferences
  • choose “Sharing”
  • select “DVD or CD Sharing”

If your other computer is a PC:

  • choose the “DVD or CD Sharing” panel
  • click “Enable DVD or CD Sharing”

Now continue on the other Mac or the PC as follows:

  • place a CD or DVD in the optical disc drive (on the MacBook Air, the disc will appear in the Finder sidebar under “Devices”)
  • click “Accept” when prompted to do so on the other Mac or PC
  • the disc will then become available to your MacBook Air

4) Sleep mode and shutting your MacBook Air down (a) Sleep mode

To use the sleep mode on your MacBook Air for short periods of inactivity, take one of the following actions:

  • close your display
  • select Apple > Sleep on the Menu Bar
  • select Apple > System Preferences, then Energy Saver, and set the sleep timer
  • press your power button and select Sleep from the dialogue box

Please note: do not move your MacBook Air until the sleep indicator light begins to pulse, otherwise you risk damaging your hard disc.

To wake your MacBook Air from sleep mode:

  • open the closed display, or
  • press the power button or any key of the keyboard if the display is open

(b) Shutting the MacBook Air down

  • Select Apple > Shut Down from the Menu Bar, or
  • Press the power button and select Shut Down in the dialogue box

5) Quick Mac OS X guide (a) Operating system

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard is the operating system of your MacBook Air. It controls your files, applications and connected devices. It works in a comparable way to Windows.

(b) Basic controls

The basic controls are your keyboard and trackpad. If you’re more used to Windows, you’ll find that you’ll need to use the keyboard and trackpad fewer times to achieve similar results.

(c) Central features

The icons, layouts and navigation of the MacBook Air screens are straightforward. Along with the windows, menus, folders and shortcuts, are four central features that help you work quickly and simply:

  • Desktop
  • Dock
  • Finder
  • Menu bar

Desktop

Desktop is the screen you start with each time you use your MacBook Air. Use it to store such things as files, folders and pictures.

The first icon you’ll see on Desktop is the Macintosh HD (hard drive). When you use other functions of your MacBook Air, further HD icons appear. Double-click an icon to view its files and applications.

Please note the following.

  • When you connect a peripheral device to your MacBook Air, an icon appears on the Desktop
  • If you have different users for your MacBook Air, Mac OS X gives each one a Desktop
  • Desktop always lies behind the applications that you run

Dock

The Dock is a row of icons along the bottom of your screen. Click on these icons to access your folders, applications and windows.

Note that when a window appears, it has three coloured buttons in the top left corner.

  • Red closes the window
  • Yellow minimises the window to the Dock
  • Green maximises and minimises the size of the window

Finder

The Finder is an icon on the far left of the Dock. Use it to navigate and manage your MacBook Air’s folders, files and applications.

Menu Bar

The Mac OS X Menu Bar is a single line at the top of the screen.

Use the Menu Bar to

  • view recent work
  • view and change settings and applications
  • close applications
  • interact with a programme
  • log out
  • start the sleep mode
  • begin restart
  • switch off your MacBook Air

The Menu Bar changes to match the application you’re using.

Connectivity

Your MacBook Air has a headphone jack, USB 2.0 port, and a Micro-DVI port concealed in a hatch on the right-hand side. You also receive a Micro-DVI to VGA adaptor and a Micro-DVI to DVI adaptor with your MacBook Air. Use the ports and adaptors to connect a range of peripheral devices such as printers, cameras and hard drives. Alternatively use the Bluetooth® wireless connection.

7) Battery power

You can run your MacBook Air directly from an electricity supply by using the 45W MagSafe Power Adaptor. Alternatively use the built-in battery.

The time between battery charges varies according to the applications you use and the drain on power caused by peripheral devices. If you don’t need a wireless connection, you can turn off AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth® to help extend the battery’s charge.

Connect the MagSafe Power Adaptor once the battery begins to run low. The adaptor works when the MacBook Air is on, in sleep mode, or off. To recharge your MacBook Air as quickly as possible, however, turn the computer off or put it in sleep mode.

The amber light on the MagSafe Power Adaptor tells you that you must charge the battery. The green light indicates that charging is complete. The battery icon in the Menu Bar shows you the battery charge level.

Please note: you cannot change your MacBook Air battery yourself. Only an Apple authorised dealer can replace it.

Survival Guide: Securing Networks Without Borders

Survival of the Fittest as a Clicking Bank Affiliate

Don’t you want to laugh at some of the ads you see. “Make easy money as a Clickbank affiliate”. Let me tell you, if it was that easy, 95% of all Internet marketers wouldn’t be failing at this business. So it’s time that somebody printed a Clickbank affiliate survival guide. While this article won’t be possibly replace an entire guide, it is the hopes of this author that it will be at least alert you to some of the things that as an affiliate you should be on the lookout for. Otherwise, life as a Clickbank affiliate can be a real nightmare.

Probably your biggest pitfall of being a Clickbank affiliate is your competition. What most people don’t realize is that they are not alone in this business. Clickbank probably has the largest affiliate base of any affiliate network on the internet. So if you are going to have a chance of succeeding, the first thing you want to do is not try to compete with others promoting the same product.

This is probably the easiest thing to avoid because of the tools that Clickbank gives you. The Clickbank marketplace may very well be the greatest thing to come to Internet marketing since the introduction of the autoresponder. At the Clickbank marketplace, you can see every product that is being sold and make an informed decision as to what products you want to sell. How do you do this? You do this by examining the stats.

The stats that Clickbank tracks are dollars per sale, percent per sale, percent referred and gravity. Let’s take them one at a time and point out what you’d like to see in each.

1. Dollars per sale is how much you will make on each sale. Ideally, you want to look for products that pay the most, especially if you are going to use Google Adwords to promote the products, which can really eat up profits quickly. But this is not the only thing you want to look for.
2. Percent per sale is the percent of each sale that the affiliate gets. Ideally, you want at least 50% on each sale. Some products pay as much as 75% or more. Of course, these products are more popular and harder to sell because of the competition.
3. Percent referred is the percentage of all sales that come from affiliates. This is a very important figure and usually coincides with the next stat. Ideally, you don’t want to compete with the products where 85 to 90% of the sales are coming from affiliates.
4. Gravity may be the most important stat to gauge the competition. This figure tells you roughly how many affiliates are promoting this product. You want to sell product with little competition, you want to look for gravity numbers under 20.

Ok, putting this all together, ideally, these are the numbers you want to look for:

Dollars per sale – $25 or more
Percent per sale – 50% or more
Percent referred – Less than 70%
Gravity – Under 20

Believe it or not, these products exist. You just have to find them. When you do, you have found products that you will have a decent chance of selling, especially if you use Google Adwords and mine long tail keywords.

These are just some basics on how to survive as a Clickbank affiliate.

Apple 13″ Macbook Pro Video Review – HotHardware

Macbook Pro Review

First impressions

The previous the MacBook Pros were very good indeed. They delivered consistently professional quality and great features. Reviewing next generation MacBook Pros is therefore something of a treat.

An initial glance at the latest models shows nothing new. This isn’t disappointing: the sturdy casings and the smart design are exactly what you want from a superior laptop. The keyboard appears tidier – the result of some minor changes – but apart from that, everything looks as impressive as it always has.

This might suggest that any internal changes are also minor. Not so. When you fire up the MacBook Pros and start putting each model through its paces, you soon realise you’re working with machines that excel expectations.

Technology

To begin with, the processors are Intel 45 nanometer Penryns. These are noticeably faster than the 65 nanometer Meroms installed in the older MacBook Pros, and easily beat the Meroms in all benchmark tests.

The standard processors for the two 15 inch MacBook Pros are 2.4GHz and 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duos. The 17 inch has the 2.5GHz. Allied to these are enhanced hard drives of 200GB for the 15 inch 2.4GHz, and 250GB for the 15 inch and 17 inch 2.5 GHz.

Of particular interest to the multimedia user is the doubling of the video memory on all three MacBook Pros. The 15 inch 2.4GHz has a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB, and the 15 inch 2.5GHz and 17 inch 2.5GHz have the same graphics processor but with 512MB.

2GB of RAM supports the above technology across the range. The overall results are laptops that cope easily with advanced graphics and audio applications.

Hardware

Each of the three MacBook Pros comes with standard hardware, such as:

  • slot-loading 8x double-layer SuperDrive
  • iSight camera
  • AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth® wireless connections
  • stereo speakers
  • FireWire 400 and 800 ports
  • USB 2.0 ports (two on the 15 inch models; three on the 17 inch)
  • DVI port
  • Audio ports
  • Gigabit Ethernet port
  • ExpressCard/34 slot

There are also hardware “extras” that help the MacBook Pro stand out from the crowd. These include a powerful lithium-polymer battery; an ambient light sensor that illuminates the keyboard in dark conditions; and an energy-saving LED backlit screen.

These screens are mercury-free and anti-glare, and have resolutions of 1,440 x 900 pixels for the 15 inch models and 1,680 x 1,050 pixels for the 17 inch. With both you have bright, natural and pin sharp images.

Perhaps the best hardware extra of all, though, is the new MacBook Pro trackpad. This now has the multi-touch functions that have proved so popular on the iPhone. By pinching, swiping and rotating your fingers on the trackpad, you have remarkably fast and positive control over the features of the MacBook Pro’s creative software.

Multi-touch does give rise to a slight problem: the size of the trackpad may feel a little small for someone learning the appropriate gestures. That said, once you’re familiar with multi-touch, it’s not difficult to work within the trackpad’s boundaries.

Software

As with all new Macs, the MacBook Pro comes with the best operating system around, the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard. If you’ve never used Leopard before, its proficiency will delight you. If you’re already a Mac user, you still have something to please you because the new MacBook Pros boost the speed of Leopard and the applications that run off it.

Among these applications is Apple’s latest version of the world’s fastest browser, Safari. This comes with the usual batch of updated Apple software such as Boot Camp, Mail, iChat, iTunes, DVD Player, iPhoto and iLife ’08.

Performance

Experienced MacBook Pro users can load their preferred applications on these latest models and immediately notice the improvements in speed. For example, you can set up Photoshop CS3 in approximately eight seconds on the 15 inch 2.5GHz. You’ll then go on to discover Photoshop runs 20 – 25% faster than a 2007 2.6 GHz MacBook Pro.

Compared to a 2006 MacBook Pro, the differences are even greater. Overall, you can experience speed increases of around 50% across a range of applications. This is good news for all those who want maximum performance from a laptop.

Options

With any laptops designed for professional use, it’s always worth looking at the manufacturer’s options because some people will need a buffer zone of extra speed and power for specific applications.

The configuration options of the MacBook Pro are unlikely to let you down. To give you extra power, you can request a 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor upgrade for either the 2.5 GHz 15 inch or 17 inch models. As for RAM, you can upgrade any of the three MacBook Pros to 4GB.

On the 17 inch MacBook Pro, you might want to increase the hard drive to 300GB to provide additional room for space-stealing graphics applications. Similarly, you can ensure the perfect clarity of your images by asking for a 1,920 x 1,200 pixel screen for the same model.

Finally, if you prefer a glossy rather than anti-glare matt screen, you can request this when you place your order, as is possible with most Mac Computers .

Value

With all these upgrades packed into the same shells as the previous MacBook Pro models, you might anticipate a rise in prices. If you do, you’d be wrong. The new MacBook Pros are unquestionably better machines but the prices across the range haven’t changed. The old MacBook Pros were good value, but the latest incarnations are simply excellent for the price.

Conclusion

Want the best laptops from a great manufacturer? Look no further.

Pros

  • Speedier than the previous generation of MacBook Pros
  • Double the video memory
  • Smooth, multi-touch features on the trackpad
  • Improved battery life
  • Excellent configuration options
  • More for your money: no price increase compared to the older MacBook Pro equivalents

Cons

  • Trackpad may be a little small for novice users
